dollar_sign-300x300If you asked 100 random people to list the top three things they try to avoid in life, many of them will list ‘going to the dentist.’ There are differing opinions about why this is true, but it could relate to experiences that these people had when they were younger.

A child visiting the dentist could require a cavity to be filled. That would require some drilling and other work and, as most people know or have experienced, it often comes with some level of pain.

People simply don’t enjoy pain and the earliest experiences that we have tend to shape our expectations for the future. And while so many people know why it’s important to visit their dentist, there are numerous excuses they give regarding why they couldn’t get there. Here are some of the most common reasons.

I just don’t have the time.

Visiting a dentist doesn’t really take much time at all. Even for those individuals who haven’t seen their dentist in years, the first appointment might only take a matter of 15 to 30 minutes, or less.

Depending on the work that’s required, they may need to come back again for a follow up, but that first visit is short enough where this excuse shouldn’t even be mentioned.

I brush daily.

People who honestly believe brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash twice a day is enough are fooling themselves. Plaque can build up, causing a host of other dental problems that can be detrimental to oral health.

Brushing, flossing, and rinsing is certainly crucial, but getting checkups every six months is also just as important.

I can’t afford it.

Sadly, far too many people believe that a simple dental visit is more than they can afford. So they let their oral health decline. In truth, even if you didn’t have dental insurance, paying for a bi-annual visit for regular cleaning and a checkup is still affordable for almost anyone.

If you find yourself making any or all of these excuses to explain why you haven’t been to see your dentist lately, it’s time to step up and understand the benefits of it. You’ll be more comfortable and confident with your smile once you have.
